Nanostructured composite materials

Purpose and Scope

Nanostructured composite materials based on calcium orthophosphates (CaP) and natural polymers (chitosan (Ch), sodium alginate (Alg)) are perspective for using in practical medicine, in particular, orthopedia, traumatology and stomatology for filling bone defects.

 Main Characteristics and Essence

The main phases of the obtained products are finely divided hydroxyapatite, apatite carbonate, apatite and tricalcium phosphate (TCP) composite, and biopolymers. The average crystallite size is
25–50 nm. The hardness of cement with polymers is 2.5–5 MPa. High porosity allows the immobilization of drugs.

Benefits:

  • Composition close to biogenic bone tissue
  • Nontoxic
  • Biocompatible
  • Resorption ability
  • Enhance bone regeneration
  • Antimicrobial properties
  • Mechanical properties of metal implants are joined with biocompatibility of coating material

Intellectual Property Protection Status

Two patents of Ukraine for invention and utility model were received.

 Market Demand

Nanostructured composite materials based on calcium orthophosphates and natural polymers on titanium substrates are used to increase the biocompatibility of medical implants.

Readiness for Application

The materials are used in the medical field.
